Belarusian Marine Dies During Drill

CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina - A Marine who died of injuries suffered during live-fire training at Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia was identified Tuesday as a Belarusian immigrant and mortarman.

Corporal Yevgeniy S. Kokleyev, 22, of Richmond Heights, Ohio, was born in Gomel, Belarus, and had served as a Russian translator for the Marine Corps, officials at Camp Lejeune said in a statement. Kokleyev was stationed at the North Carolina Marine base.

He was pronounced dead on the firing range Monday evening, apparently from shrapnel wounds he received during the training exercise.

Kokleyev was a member of the 3rd Battalion of the 6th Marine Corps Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division.

The 600-member unit, which arrived at A.P. Hill on Nov. 28 for a variety of training drills, was due to return home Tuesday.
