Arrest Warrant Issued for Gusinsky

Russian authorities have issued an international arrest warrant for exiled media magnate Vladimir Gusinsky, the chief prosecutor's office said on Monday.

Gusinsky, owner of Russia's largest independent country-wide media group, Media-Most, is charged with fraud. He remains abroad and failed to turn up for questioning by a prosecutor last month.

Interfax quoted prosecution investigator Valery Nikolayev as saying the international warrant had been issued after he failed to appear as required. A countrywide arrest warrant had already been issued.

The charges against Gusinsky, which have sparked fears of a crackdown on a free press in Russia, focus on the conditions in which he bought a video company and on whether Media-Most illegally transferred assets abroad.

Gusinsky was jailed for three days earlier this year but was later released and allowed to go abroad. Media-Most has since concluded a deal with the media arm of gas giant Gazprom to wipe out some of its large debts.
