Aeroflot Passengers Detained After Fistfight Delays Flight

SINGAPORE — A Russian man was jailed and another was fined after a fistfight aboard an Aeroflot plane on the runway at the Singapore airport delayed the flight to Moscow for two hours, officials said Tuesday.

Valery Gusevskoi, 43, was sentenced Monday to eight weeks in jail for punching his friend Alexander Konolorev, 29, Subordinate Court public affairs officer Joyce Lin said.

He could have been jailed up to a year.

Konolorev was fined the maximum fine of 1,000 Singapore dollars ($576) for being drunk aboard a plane, Lin said.

The two men scuffled as the plane was taxiing down a runway for takeoff at about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 14, after Gusevskoi accused Konolorev of flirting with Gusevskoi's wife, who was with them on the plane.

Investigations showed that "both men were drunk at the time of the incident," a court statement said. Konolorev suffered a black eye in the drunken fistfight.

The two were drinking vodka brought on board by Gusevskoi, the statement said.

Aeroflot said the delay cost the airline about 10,000 Singapore dollars ($5,760) in airport parking fees and assistance for passengers who missed connecting flights in Moscow, the statement said.
