12 Fishermen Drown in Bus Crash

Twelve Russian fishermen were killed over the weekend when the minibus in which they were riding plunged through the ice on a reservoir, the Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday.

The accident occurred on Saturday on the Kamsk reservoir near Perm, about 1,200 kilometers east of Moscow, said Viktor Beltsov, a ministry spokesman. Divers finished pulling the bodies out of the minibus, which was lying 12 meters below the surface of the reservoir, on Monday, he said.

Investigators have blamed the driver of the privately-owned minibus for carelessness for driving on thin ice.

Ice-fishing is hugely popular in Russia, both for sport and as a food source. Thousands of anglers become stranded on drifting floes in the seas and lakes every year.
