Weather Calamity in Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine - Two people have been killed and 241 injured as icy winds and heavy snowfalls hit 11 Ukrainian regions, leaving more than 4,500 settlements without electricity supply, Ukraine's top emergencies official said Wednesday.

Power lines were snapped across Ukraine, hampering traffic and railway communications over the last three days and causing damages of some 300 million hryvna ($54.3 million), said Emergency Situations Minister Vasyl Durdynets.

More than 1,500 secondary schools were closed due to bad weather, and about 50 hospitals and 1,500 bakeries were cut from power supply as of Wednesday morning, Durdynets said.

Some 7,200 workers were working to restore electricity to the regions, where 743 kilometers of railway power grid were damaged, causing delays to some 147 passenger trains and halting 112 freight trains.
