U.S. Pleas for Pope

WASHINGTON — The United States on Tuesday urged Russia to free U.S. businessman Edmond Pope from detention and end his trial for alleged spying.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher made the plea after Pope, who suffers from a rare form of bone cancer, developed such severe pain in his joints that his trial had to be postponed at least until Thursday.

Boucher also said Secretary of State Madeleine Albright raised the issue with Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov in a telephone call after reports Pope was doubled over in agony. Albright has said Moscow’s handling of the case is "outrageous."
