Policemen Detained on Weapons Theft

Four police officers and an industrial engineer have been detained in southern Russia on suspicion of stealing weapons earlier seized from criminals and meant for destruction, officials said Tuesday.

Prosecutors in the Stavropol region said the engineer detained worked for a company engaged in destruction of the arms, Itar-Tass reported.

Agents seized 16 pistols and cartridges when the four were detained. Further searches revealed that they kept two machine-guns, a grenade launcher complete with grenades, 85 pistols, 34 rifles, 100 hand grenades and a large amount of explosives at a warehouse of the regional police department.

The arsenal was slated for destruction, but the suspects, whose names were not revealed, allegedly forged documents to show that the weapons indeed were destroyed and later stole them, the report said.
