Dagestan Leader Dies of Wounds

MAKHACHKALA, Dagestan — Magomed Khachilayev, an ethnic minority leader in Dagestan who was shot and seriously wounded in a gun battle last week, died over the weekend, a hospital official said.

Khachilayev was wounded in the head in an ambush Wednesday just outside his home in Makhachkala, the capital of the republic, which is next door to Chechnya.

Khachilayev died in the hospital Sunday morning without regaining consciousness, said Omar Aliyev, head of the intensive care department.

Khachilayev headed an organization representing a Dagestani ethnic minority, the Laks. He had been arrested last year for allegedly organizing a violent anti-government raid, in which his supporters held policemen and officials hostage, but was released under an amnesty.

Zumrud Dzhandarova, a prominent Dagestani art critic who had been with Khachilayev at the time of the attack, was killed in Wednesday’s gunfight between the attackers and Khachilayev’s bodyguards, police said.
