71 Tons Harvested

The annual harvest is almost over with 71 million metric tons of grain gathered, Interfax quoted Deputy Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev as saying Wednesday.

This represents 13.2 million tons more than last year’s comparable figure of 57.8 million tons, or a 22.8 percent increase on 1999.

The latest figure for this year was derived from an initial weighing of the grain before cleaning and drying, and harvest volume by clean weight was expected to be lower. Gordeyev has predicted the total by clean weight will be 65 million tons. A final total for the harvest will be released Nov. 15.

In 1999, the final total was 54.7 million tons of grain. In 1998 only 47.9 million tons was harvested, well down from the 88.5 million tons produced in 1997.
