28,000 Without Heat After Explosion

An explosion ripped through a Siberian boiler-pumping plant Wednesday, severely injuring a plant employee and cutting off heat in an area that is home to 28,000 people, emergency officials said.

The blast and ensuring fire heavily damaged the plant, which is located in Omsk, about 2,250 kilometers east of Moscow. It left 19 large apartment houses without heat, said Marina Ryklina, a spokeswoman for Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry.

Most Russian apartments are heated by hot water piped from massive, centralized heating stations that supply whole towns or districts.
