WTO Talks Heat Up

WASHINGTON — U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky said Friday that President Vladimir Putin has intensified efforts to join the World Trade Organization.

"Putin has evidenced a desire to step up WTO negotiations," Barshefsky said in an interview. "We’ve had quite a bit of contact with the Russians ... and hopefully, the next [U.S.] administration can bring Russia into the trading system."

Russia applied in 1993 to enter the WTO.

During a visit to Moscow in June, U.S. President Bill Clinton told the State Duma that Russia should join the WTO. But U.S. trade officials said it could take Moscow several years to complete the process.
