Ukrainian-Azeri Pact

KIEV — Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksandr Kuzmuk and his Azeri counterpart Safar Abiyev on Tuesday signed a cooperative defense program for 2001, the Defense Ministry said.

The program includes cooperation in military policy, bilateral cooperation in the framework of the NATO-sponsored Partnership for Peace program, and interaction in the GUUAM organization — an alliance of Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Moldova.

Kuzmuk said both countries planned to cooperate in arms maintenance, their development and modernization, which can be "mutually beneficial," Interfax said.

Abiyev, who is on a two-day official visit to Ukraine, said the two ministries also planned to develop an officers’ exchange program.
