Putin’s Birthday Bash

ST. PETERSBURG — President Vladimir Putin celebrated his 48th birthday in his hometown on Saturday with a vigorous day full of family, prominent friends — and his first judo coach.

Putin had a lavish birthday dinner with St. Petersburg’s mayor, the regional governor, his chief of staff, the head of St. Petersburg State University and other city dignitaries. Putin, a black belt in judo, also invited his first coach, Interfax reported.

He took time out for work, holding talks with World Bank President James Wolfensohn — then brought Wolfensohn along to the season opening of St. Petersburg’s renowned Mariinsky Theater.
