Judge Files Appeal

Liberal judge Sergei Pashin, fired last week for giving out his telephone number and criticizing another judge, appealed Wednesday to be reinstated to the Higher Qualification Collegium of Judges.

Pashin worked on judicial reform under former President Boris Yeltsin and was the driving force behind introducing jury trials in nine regions.

The Moscow Qualification Collegium of Judges dismissed Pashin Oct. 11 because of a scholarly paper in which he questioned the legality of a conviction for draft dodging handed down to a conscientious objector.

The Collegium also accused Pashin of "breaching professional ethics" by giving out his office phone number during a live radio program earlier this month.
