Babitsky to Appeal

Attorneys for Radio Liberty reporter Andrei Babitsky said they would appeal his conviction all the way to the International Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg if need be.

Babitsky, whose critical reporting from Chechnya provoked the ire of the Kremlin, was convicted Friday by a Dagestani court of using false documents. The court fined him 13,200 rubles ($470), but suspended the order under an amnesty passed in May.

Babitsky’s lawyer, Genri Reznik, said Monday that it could take Babitsky’s appeal up to six months to work its way through the courts to the Supreme Court. If those attempts fail, he said, he might appeal to the Strasbourg court.
