Zimbabwe Power Cuts

HARARE, Zimbabwe -- Deeply in debt, the state power company plans to periodically cut power to its customers to save energy and money, targeting residential areas and even factories and other businesses.

Zimbabwe produces about 70 percent of its power, with the rest being imported.

The state power company owes some $315 million in domestic and foreign debts that accumulated, company managers say, because it was prevented from hiking power charges by the government in its bid to hold down inflation.

The state-owned oil procurement agency owes $236 million to its suppliers and creditors and also blames much of its debt on a state-imposed price freeze.
