Yastrzhembsky Drafted

MOSCOW -- Acting President Vladimir Putin drafted in former Kremlin spin-doctor Sergei Yastrzhembsky on Thursday to handle the tricky task of improving the image at home and abroad of Russia's military campaign in Chechnya.

A Kremlin spokeswoman said Putin appointed Yastrzhembsky, a former diplomat whose career included spells as spokesman for the Foreign Ministry and for President Boris Yeltsin, to take charge of coordinating the flow of information concerning Chechnya.

After Yeltsin sacked him in 1998, Yastrzhembsky joined the election staff of the Fatherland party led by Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov.

But he left Luzhkov earlier this week after his party scored poorly in the parliamentary elections.
