Vodafone May Up Bid

LONDON -- Britain's Vodafone-Airtouch PLC is prepared to raise its bid for German telecom group Mannesmann AG and to make concessions on management and strategy issues, the Financial Times reported Thursday. The newspaper said a new bid could add about 5 billion euros ($5.05 billion) to its 155 billion euro offer.

It quoted Vodafone chief executive Chris Gent as saying his company would be prepared to renegotiate on both price and plans if Mannesmann dropped its defenses and agreed to talk about a deal.

But Mannesmann chief Klaus Esser was quoted as saying Gent was using the press to persuade shareholders he could buy the German group cheaply.
