TASHKENT,Uzbekistan -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov swept to victory as expected in Sunday's controversial election, earning five more years at the helm of the pivotal former Soviet Central Asian state of 24 million people.

"Out of those who voted, 91.90 percent voted for Islam Karimov," Central Election Commission Chairman Nazhmiddin Kamilov said at a news briefing in the capital, Tashkent.
