Ukraine Output Rises

KIEV -- Ukraine posted industrial growth for the first time in 10 years in 1999, with a 4.3 percent jump over the year before, the State Statistics Committee said Wednesday.

The ferrous metals sector, which accounts for about a quarter of Ukrainian industry, posted growth of 6.2 percent. The light industry, woodworking and machinery construction sectors also reported growth, said Liubov Lisova, an analyst at the State Statistics Committee.

The growth came as the financial crisis and the slide of the hryvna currency made imports prohibitively expensive for many Ukrainians, who turned to domestically produced goods as a result.
