Truckers Block Roads

PARIS -- Truckers blockaded highways and border crossings throughout France on Monday to protest rising gas prices and the government-backed shorter working week.

The protest, which began early Monday, snarled traffic across France. In some places, foreign trucks were blocked but private cars were allowed through.

Truck owners organized the strike to protest the government's decision to implement a 35-hour workweek. The plan is designed to ease unemployment, but truck owners say it could hurt their ability to compete with trucking companies throughout Europe. They were also protesting rising gasoline prices, which have climbed 30 percent since January last year.
