Train Crash Kills 1, 14 Hurt

An assistant engineer was killed Wednesday and 15 people were injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train in the Novgorod region, an emergency official said.

The train was heading to St. Petersburg from Velikiye Luki when it collided head-on with the freight train loaded with timber. The locomotive and two front cars were derailed and overturned, Viktor Beltsov of the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the accident was caused by ice that covered signals along the rails, Itar-Tass said.

An assistant engineer was killed and the engineer was injured, Itar-Tass said. It said 13 passengers were also injured in the early morning collision, about 500 kilometers northwest of Moscow.

Rail traffic along the route was halted and repair teams have been sent from St. Petersburg to the site of the accident, the news agency said.

The crash severed a cable linking the Moscow and St. Petersburg currency exchanges, leaving the northwestern bourse cut off from a joint trading session, an official said.

St. Petersburg Currency Exchange chief analyst Sergei Linev said his bourse would trade in parallel to the unified trading session that usually links it to seven other exchanges until communications had been restored.
