Thieves Steal Furs

MOSCOW -- Resourceful thieves using forged documents have stolen $500,000 worth of furs in the Siberian city of Irkutsk, police said Wednesday.

The furs, intended for a St. Petersburg auction, were brought to an airport warehouse in Irkutsk on Jan. 13 by the Chart company, said Pyotr Zelenetsky, a spokesman for East Siberian transport police.

Later that evening, thieves posing as Chart officials took the furs away under some pretext, presenting warehouse keepers with forged documents, he said. The theft was discovered only two days later, when Chart brought in another shipment of furs, Zelenetsky said.

The missing shipment included 3,900 sable furs, 30,000 squirrel furs, 178 lynx furs and 4,000 Russian mink furs. No suspects in the theft have been detained so far, Zelenetsky said.
