Strikes at India Ports

BOMBAY, India -- Port managers prepared for a long shutdown Wednesday as nearly 100,000 Indian workers went on strike for a second day at 11 major ports to demand higher wages.

Indian ports handle some 684,000 metric tons of cargo daily and a prolonged strike is expected to cripple the movement of ships and goods.

Talks between the government and the unions broke down when workers refused an offer of a 28.5 percent pay raise. Oil shipments have not been affected by the strike because ships use their own pumps to transfer oil to pipelines.
