Spain's Port Blockade

RABAT, Morocco -- Morocco said a port blockade by Spanish farmers of Moroccan food trucks contradicted a friendship pact between the two countries.

Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane El Youssoufi called a Cabinet meeting to work out alternative routes for the country's exports to Europe, state-run media quoted him as saying in a statement Tuesday.

Some 1,500 Spanish farmers Tuesday blocked access at the southern port of Algeciras to trucks carrying Moroccan fruit and fish to Europe.

The farmers have said they were protesting a recent European Union decision to lift an import limit of 150,000 metric tons per year on Moroccan tomatoes exported to Europe.
