Russia Slams Latvia

MOSCOW -- Russia lashed out at Latvia for last week's conviction of a World War II Soviet partisan for war crimes and for failing to prosecute Nazi war criminals.

A Latvian court Friday convicted 77-year-old Vasily Kononov of war crimes for ordering the execution of nine innocent civilians whom he suspected of pro-Nazi sympathies in 1944, when Latvia was under Nazi occupation.

"An affair unprecedented in world experience took place - a man convicted for the fight against fascism,'' the Foreign Ministry statement said.

"The Latvian court ... threw away the calls of all fighters on the side of the anti-Hitler coalition, and demonstrated a complete disregard for the spirit and principles of the Nuremberg tribunal,'' the statement said.
