Real Wages Fall 15%

MOSCOW -- The real incomes of Russians fell 15 percent in 1999 compared to 1998, officials in the Economics Ministry were quoted as telling Interfax on Sunday.

According to preliminary reports, the average wage of workers in state-run and small enterprises amounted to 1,565 rubles in December 1999, or more than 49 percent than in December 1998, the agency said.

However, calculated in dollar terms, the average monthly wage amounted to $67 to $68 over the past four months of 1999, against $74 in December 1998, Interfax reported.
