Putin Upbeat on Grain

MOSCOW -- Russia will eventually be able to survive without importing grain, acting President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying Thursday, but it still faces a serious shortage this year.

"Russia will be able to do without grain imports," Ria news agency quoted Putin as saying.

Interfax quoted a government statement as saying Russia's total grain resources this season, including carry-over stocks, food aid and around 6 million tons of imports, would reach 65.8 million tons, against demand of 75.1 million tons.
