Police Nab Prostitutes

MOSCOW -- Police detained more than 68,000 women for allegedly practicing prostitution on Moscow streets in 1999, a police spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Most of the women were quickly released, sometimes after paying a fine, according to a Moscow city police spokeswoman who spoke on condition of anonymity. Police took 104 to a special city detention center for prostitutes, she said.

Of those detained, 56 percent were Russian nationals and most of the others were from other former Soviet republics. Police opened 20 criminal cases against owners of brothels, according to the spokeswoman.
