Poles Want Normality

WARSAW, Poland -- In the aftermath of the expulsion of nine Russian diplomats on spy allegations and similar action by Moscow, Poland's government said Monday it wants good relations with Russia.

"We want good, loyal, decent relations between Poland and Russia,'' said Foreign Minister Bronislaw Geremek. "But normal relations cannot take place in the context of criminal activities.''

Geremek said Monday that both sides should learn from what happened and not blow it out of proportion "so that it has an impact on our relations.''

"The best thing is to consider it a closed matter,'' Geremek said.

Neither country gave details of how the alleged spying was conducted or what information may have been compromised. Polish officials suggested it involved mostly economic and political areas.
