Poland Expels 9 Russian Diplomats

WARSAW, Poland -- Poland is to expel nine Russian diplomats for spying, the government said, in a blow to already uneasy relations between the former Cold War allies.

In a communiqu? signed Thursday by government spokesman Krzysztof Luft, Poland said it had called in the Russian ambassador to demand the departure of the nine diplomats.

The statement said the security services first detected the nine engaging in "active espionage operations" last year.

A ministry source confirmed the nine would be expelled and said their departure was expected within a week.

Government officials have refused to give further details of the espionage activity the Russians are accused of, or how it harmed the interests of the Polish state.

Last year Polish counter-intelligence arrested three army officers on charges of spying for Russia in the early 1990s.

Poland last expelled a Russian diplomat for spying in 1993.
