Observers on Border

TBILISI, Georgia -- Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will start monitoring Georgia's border with Chechnya later this month, a Georgian official said Friday.

"The permanent observation point of the OSCE will start operating in the village of Shatili at the border with Chechnya by the end of January," said Avtandil Napetvaridze, spokesman for Georgia's Foreign Ministry.

He said a number of the 20 observers had already arrived in Tbilisi and were preparing to leave for Shatili.

Georgia's border with Chechnya has become the focus of mounting tension between Moscow and Tbilisi.
