Music Union Mooted

LONDON -- Britain's EMI Group PLC on Monday declined to comment on a German magazine report that Bertelsmann AG was considering purchasing EMI or Sony's Sony Music.

"We don't comment on these sort of reports," an EMI spokesman said.

Der Spiegel reported over the weekend that the Germany media company was eyeing Sony Music or Britain's EMI, quoting Bertelsmann chief executive Thomas Middelhoff as saying his firm wanted to become No. 1 in the music business this year.

Sony Corp. also declined to comment Monday.

Of the recording industry's top five major music stables, Sony Music ranked second last year in terms of album sales growth, followed by Bertelsmann's BMG, Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Music and EMI. Seagram Co. led the pack.
