Moscow's UEFA Hopes

MOSCOW -- Moscow has applied to host the European Championships in 2008, Interfax reported Wednesday.

Mayor Yury Luzhkov made the announcement during Wednesday's opening ceremony of "Football Market 2000," an international exhibit on the soccer industry that is taking place at the Kremlin Palace until Jan. 22.

UEFA President Lennart Johansson gave his blessing to Russia's bid.

"I have no doubt Russia can host the event," Johansson said at the exhibition. "And it must go to Eastern Europe."

St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Sochi and other cities were named in the bid as possible sites to hold games for the championships, as it would be impossible for Moscow to host all the games, according to Interfax.
