Lithuanian Jobless Up

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- Officials in the former Soviet Baltic republics announced record high unemployment rates this week, but said they expect the figures to improve during 2000.

Lithuania on Tuesday reported a 10 percent jobless rate, its highest figure since the Baltic states broke with Moscow in 1991. Unemployment in Latvia stands at around 9 percent, and 5 percent in Estonia. All are post-Soviet highs.

The free-market Baltic states are considered the most economically advanced of the former Soviet republics.
