Legal Help for Latvia

RIGA, Latvia -- Latvian prosecutors investigating suspected war criminal Konrad Kalejs plan to ask Russia for help in building their case, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

"We often ask Russia for legal assistance and we will do so in this case," said a spokeswoman for the prosecutor general's office.

Nazi-hunters have long urged Latvia to press for the extradition of 86-year-old Australian citizen Kalejs, who left Britain earlier this month to avoid implementation of a deportation order amid allegations he aided the World War II slaughter of Jews in his homeland.

Latvian officials say they do not have enough evidence to link Kalejs to atrocities committed by the Nazi-backed Arajs hit squad that he was allegedly a member of.
