Latvia Detains Suspect

RIGA, Latvia -- Latvian police on Monday named a prisoner as a suspect in connection with the 1998 murder of prominent Russian lawmaker Galina Starovoitova.

Police said they detained Konstantin Nikulin, 32, in October 1999 on unrelated charges. They later began to suspect him of involvement in Starovoitova's assassination when they discovered he owned a rare gun.

The weapon was the same type used to gun down the liberal parliamentary leader in the stairwell of her St. Petersburg apartment on Nov. 20, 1998, Latvian police said.

Bullets and shells from the suspect's weapon have been sent to forensics experts in St. Petersburg for analysis, police spokesman Krists Leskaln said.
