Hockey President Fined for Fighting

HELSINKI, Finland -- Russian Ice Hockey Federation President Alexander Steblin was found guilty Wednesday of violent behavior at the Helsinki airport, the Finnish news agency STT reported.

A local court ordered Steblin to pay a fine of 2,100 markkaa ($360), as well as 6,900 markkaa in damages and doctors fees to a Finnish man with whom he fought at the airport in November, STT said.

Steblin, who had been in Helsinki to watch the Karjala Cup hockey tournament, attacked a fellow passenger who had provoked him before attacking police called to the scene, according to the news agency.

Steblin's mobile phone was broken in the scuffle during which he hit the Finnish man in the head with his fist, STT said.

The Finnish passenger was not named. Steblin was not at the hearing.

The Karjala Cup, played Nov. 11-14, is part of the Euro Hockey Tour played by the four top European national teams, Finland, Sweden, Russia and the Czech Republic.
