Friendly Bananas

LONDON -- Bananas stamped with the words "people-friendly'' hit British supermarket shelves Monday as part of an initiative to support independent producers and their workers, instead of multinational corporations.

The Fairtrade Foundation stamp on the fruit assures shoppers that the workers who produced the bananas received a fair price and worked in satisfactory conditions.

The European Union's current system of tariffs and quotas favoring its former colonies has been ruled illegal four times by the World Trade Organization, and the United States has imposed almost $200 million a year in sanctions against EU goods to protest the policy.
