French Protest Ends

PARIS -- French truck company owners Wednesday called off a protest that blocked thousands of foreign truckers at French borders for two days, saying progress had been made in talks with the government.

However, pockets of resistance remained, notably in the southwest Basque region.

Truck owners had been protesting a 30 percent rise in diesel fuel prices over the last year. But their main concern was the French government's program to reduce the workweek from 39 hours to 35.

In the talks, Transport Ministry officials said truckers could work more than 35 hours a week if they were paid supplements beyond the 35th hour. Trucking bosses will also receive tax breaks on diesel fuel.
