Fischer Meets Putin

MOSCOW -- German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer met with acting President Vladimir Putin on Friday to discuss the war in Chechnya, for which Germany has urged a political solution, and bilateral issues.

Asked whether the meeting with Putin had changed Fischer's views, the president's foreign policy adviser Sergei Prikhodko said "It was not Putin's goal to soften the stance of Germany."

In the face of foreign criticism of the war, the Kremlin has insisted that the fight is only against rebels whom it brands as terrorists. Fischer recognizes Russia's right to combat terrorism, Prikhodko said.
