EU: WTO Shuns U.S.

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- A World Trade Organization disputes panel has signaled it will rule in favor of the European Union in a case against a U.S. anti-dumping law, an EU official said.

The official said Tuesday that the WTO panel's interim ruling, circulated to parties to the case, had found in favor of the EU. If the decision is confirmed in the panel's final report, the United States would still have the right to appeal.

The official's comments could not immediately be confirmed independently.

In 1998, the EU launched its complaint after a lawsuit was filed under the U.S. Antidumping Act of 1916 in Utah in 1996 against Germany's Thyssen Steel Group and others over steel imports to the United States.
