Car Market To Speed

LONDON -- Car production and sales in Central and Eastern Europe are expected to surge over the next five years as multinational carmakers drive further into the region, the Economist Intelligence Unit said in a report Tuesday.

The report forecast that passenger car output in Central and Eastern Europe would grow 30 percent to 3 million units in 2005, with Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic accounting for three-quarters of output.

Sales were expected to rise by more than 50 percent, reaching 2.88 million units by 2005, with Russia and Poland accounting for more than 60 percent of the market, it said.

"The key to success among Eastern Europe's automotive industries will lie in their ability to fit into a global manufacturing strategy," the report said.
