Buildings Evacuated

MOSCOW -- Bomb fears fed by last fall's wave of apartment explosions have forced the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes in Moscow and the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, officials said Wednesday.

Residents of a 16-story apartment building in southern Moscow were told to leave Wednesday after a bag with protruding wires was found attached to an apartment door.

But agents later learned it was a fake bomb consisting of a can, wires and traces of gunpowder, a Moscow police spokesman said.

In Rostov-on-Don, some 1,500 residents of four nine-story buildings were evacuated late Tuesday and had to spend the night at a local school following an anonymous warning about mines planted in the houses.

Rescuers and police agents examined the buildings but found nothing, the regional department for emergencies said.
