Britain Makes More

LONDON -- British manufacturing output expanded at its fastest annual rate in 4 1/2 years in November, far outstripping expectations, the National Statistics Office said Tuesday.

It said production in the sector, which accounts for about a fifth of the country's national output, rose 0.6 percent on the month to give a hefty annual growth rate of 2.2 percent, the highest since June 1995.

The latest data show manufacturing is recovering well despite the strong pound and are bound to be seized upon by those arguing that the Bank of England should continue to jack up interest rates in a bid to cool the economy.
