Baltic Brewer Boost

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- One of Lithuania's top brewers, Danish-owned Svyturys, said Wednesday it expected to boost capacity this year by over 50 percent to meet soaring demand, although profits may remain flat.

Svyturys, which saw a 19 percent rise in volume sales in 1999 to take third place on the highly competitive domestic beer market, is majority owned by Danish Carlsberg.

Svyturys general director Tomas Kucinskas said the first phase should raise capacity from 48,000 hectoliters to 65,000 hectoliters with a second phase adding 12,000 to 15,000 hectoliters.

Total investments for 2000 were seen at 40 million litas ($10 million).

Preliminary pretax profits in 1999 rose 12 percent to 29.5 million litas, while sales jumped 17.5 percent to 72.5 million litas.
