Australia Fuel Tainted

MELBOURNE, Australia -- The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Australia said Monday that interim compensation for business losses due to the aviation fuel contamination crisis could cost Mobil Oil Australia Ltd. around 1.2 million Australian dollars ($792,000) a day.

AOPAA general manager Mike Hart said a meeting would be held with Mobil on Friday to try to reach a deal on business assistance packages.

Around 5,000 light aircraft remained grounded Monday, with a test for the contaminant not expected to be finalized until midweek.

Hart said the losses to businesses that rely on the aircraft were still being determined and would vary widely.

The association has estimated the cost to the economy from the contamination problem at 50 million Australian dollars a month.
