Astana Urges Saving

ASTANA, Kazakhstan -- Kazakhstan plans to strengthen its banking secrecy laws to encourage more individuals to open savings accounts, senior officials said at a government meeting in the capital of Astana.

"The idea behind the system of draft laws was to increase savers' confidence - both corporate, but above all private savers," Deputy Prime Minister Yerzhan Utembayev said Tuesday.

If the draft legislation is passed, information about an individual's bank account would only be made available in the event of a criminal case being brought against that saver, he added.
