Air Security Tightened

MOSCOW -- Russian aviation officials are tightening security for airlines and airports following threats of terrorist acts, a transportation official said Thursday.

Yury Maseyev, an assistant to the director of the Russian Air Transportation Service, said instructions had been sent to all regions of Russia on measures to tighten control of aviation security.

Valery Saleyev, deputy director of the transportation service, said control and preventive security measures have been tightened because the threat of terrorist acts has grown.

He did not elaborate or describe the security measures, but said that attempts to smuggle explosives, weapons and ammunition have been cut short. Saleyev did not cite any specific incident.
