UN to Protect Copyrights on Internet

GENEVA -- With bu ying and selling over the Internet growing so quickly that governments cannot keep up, the United Nations copyright agency is attempting to regulate fledgling electronic commerce without strangling it.

U.S. Commerce Secretary William Daley will kick off a three-day meeting of the World Intellectual Property Organization on Tuesday, delivering the keynote speech on the values of so-called e-commerce, which the United States is promoting.

Daley is expected to underline the clear link between intellectual property and the Internet, and that problems such as copyright infringement and protection of privacy are problems which can only be solved if countries worldwide work together.

Of particular concern to the 700 government, business and technology leaders gathering for the meeting will be avoiding piracy of products like

music, software and movies that can

be downloaded directly over the Internet.
